MY PAINTINGS

My recent series of acrylic paintings on canvas and paper present a visual experience of vibrant color, direct brushwork and lively energetic compositions incorporating decorative still life motifs/objects and landscape elements. This series explores a unity of familiar interior elements with the landscape to emphasize a living connection with the natural world past our windows and walls.

A study of the painting series of interiors by French artist Henri Matisse intrigued me with his concept of a window as a passage between an interior space and the world beyond. This concept inspired me to expand my previous still life-focused work to develop this series of paintings where interior and exterior elements are intertwined.

Decorative objects, tabletop still life elements, flowers, and colorful textile patterns are all recurring elements in my work. These are juxtaposed against landscape elements of twisted branches, stylized trees and skies, and inventive plants and flowers - all derived from my plein-air excursions. Areas of abstract patterns within the landscape are playful notes of references to the small flora that holds so much beauty.

My creative process begins with an inspiration I’ve observed from nature - a particular garden flower, a cluster of trees or branches, native plants along the hiking trails of rural Wisconsin - typically a small detail in nature discovered while plein-air sketching. Elements of still life are incorporated for the decorative motifs that blend with the flora.
I create a small sketch to organize the components of the composition and focus on directional elements and bold shapes that add visual energy. On the canvas or paper, I work very directly and intuitively with little formal planning and often listen to classical music while I paint. The rhythms and movements of the music frequently influence my fluid brush strokes and colorful patterns.

There is a deliberate ambiguity in the compositions where boundaries between interior/exterior are vague to emphasize the unity of both as one connected space where all the elements harmoniously coexist. Ultimately I strive to express the beauty that can be found in the sublime intricacies of the everyday - in both our domestic surroundings and the natural world.

The classic illustrations by Ludwig Bemelmans (Madeline), Sir John Tenniel (Alice's Adventures In Wonderland),

and Frederick Siebel (Amelia Bedelia) were and still are, my favorites.

Historic locations/architecture and vintage objects are my delight and inspiration as I feel they have timeless beauty and charm. I incorporate these influences in my illustrations. I create a mixed media painting and may finish some details digitally.
